When will we be able to see the proposed all ages and abilities bike lane plan for South Main Street and how it will affect traffic movement, street parking and any businesses. Also who do we contact at city hall to voice our concerns?

    Hi Danielg,

The City is currently working on the detailed design for Section 4 in the downtown and has not determined the timeline for design of the remaining sections. Please stay tuned.

'So is there a rough idea of cost on the lake to lake All Ages and Abilities bike lane? Also is it true that the Government grants only cover up to $500,000 of new bike lanes and no extra funding for preexisting bike lanes? When I looked up costing in other cities I found the following cost breakdown site. (https://www.tcat.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Costing-of-Bicycle-Infrastructure-and-Programs-in-Canada.pdf)'

Thank you for your question and the link to that informative report. Now that the City has narrowed down the options, staff are preparing a cost estimate. They are also reviewing available grants. This information will be shared with the community and provided to Council to inform their decision.

At this stage, the City is seeking to identify the location for the route, estimated costs and possible funding sources. A number of factors will need to be considered by Council in making their decision on whether or not, or how, to fund the route should they endorse the proposed location and want to proceed.

So, if a vehicle pulls onto South Main Street from Pineview Rd, going south to the Marina and ends up behind a city bus, is there anyway of that vehicle getting by the city bus when the bus is stopping at all 5 of the “bus islands” on that route and impeding traffic flow? The old system of the bus pulling into the bike lane gave vehicle traffic the ability to get by and would alleviate any congestion.

Sorry I missed seeing the first time this question was asked. An answer was provided above and repeated here.

Thanks for your question. This is a very specific scenario. Yes, there is a risk that if a vehicle wants to head south on South Main and happens to pull out behind a bus and that bus has requests for all stops, the vehicle would have to wait. The City is exploring options to have the bus pull over but this will require removing parking on South Main.

So, in the videos there is no mention of how the proposed bus islands will impede the flow of traffic on South Main Street. Can you explain what is proposed for the 12 bus stops on South Main Street and how this will positively or negatively affect the motor vehicle traffic commuting this route?

Danielg asked over 3 years ago

Thank you for your question. Northbound buses on South Main Street will stop in the traffic lane, which is similar to what they do today (they stop half in the bike lane and half in the traffic lane). Southbound buses would also stop in the traffic lane. It is estimated that there is a bus every half hour, each direction.

So, if the Kinney Street, South Main Street intersection is closing for bike traffic only, what is proposed for vehicle traffic trying to get to Skaha Lake road and will this new adjustment, if there is one, be in the final costs of incorporating the "All Ages and Abilities" bike lane for South Main Street? If not, why?

Danielg asked over 3 years ago

    UPDATED:

The changes that have been proposed for the short section of Kinney Ave that links South Main Street to Skaha Lake Road have been under consideration since the 2005 Transportation Master Plan and are intended to address the congestion that frequently arises for vehicles at this location.

The proposal is to close this link to vehicles but leaving it available as a cycling and pedestrian corridor only. Vehicle traffic will transfer to Galt Avenue which will be upgraded with new intersection upgrades at South Main Street and Skaha Lake Road together with improvements at Warren Ave and Main Street and Pineview Avenue and South Main Street – these will provide overall network improvements particularly for east/west traffic flow including further growth in the Wiltse area.

These changes and the costs involved are entirely independent of the Lake to Lake Bike Route initiative.

Once the "All Ages and Abilities" bike lanes are established on South Main Street, if there is a large group of avid cyclist riding this proposed "All Ages and Abilities" route are they forced, by law, to use the "All Ages and Abilities" bike lane or can they still ride with the vehicle traffic?

Danielg asked over 3 years ago

Thanks for your question. By law, cyclists can ride on any road unless expressly prohibited from doing so (as is the case on some freeways). If an avid cyclist is riding at a fast speed and doesn’t want to ride in the bike lane, they can ride in the traffic lane. That said, the experience in other communities is that avid cyclists generally choose to ride in the protected bike lanes.

What colouring will the curbing be in the sections of "All Ages and Abilities" bike lane that require a barrier between cars and "All Ages and Abilities" bikers?

Danielg asked over 3 years ago

Thanks for your question. The colour and design of the barriers has not yet been determined. If Council approves the Lake-to-Lake project to proceed, the barrier design will be part of the next phase, which is detailed design.
