Consultation has concluded

Council endorsed the Community Climate Action Plan at their meeting on Nov. 16, 2021. You can see the final plan here. Thank you to everyone who participated.

Love our blue skies? Share your views. The City is working on a new Community Climate Action Plan with funding provided by FortisBC and the Province's Emotive program. Identified as a Council priority for this term, the plan will set targets and identify strategies to support citizens in doing their part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Penticton in three areas - Transportation, Building and Waste. Work on the plan began last October and involved the City’s Community Sustainability Advisory Committee, First Things First Okanagan and other key stakeholder groups. A draft of the plan has now been prepared based on this involvement and is ready for the community to review.

How do I participate?

  • Read the infographics and review the materials in Documents to learn about climate change in Penticton and the plan.
  • Attend one of the pop-up sessions to discuss your ideas or concerns with staff. See Key Dates for a schedule.
  • Comment on the Draft Plan included below or click on this link to open it in a new window. It's easy!
  • Complete the Community Climate Action Plan Survey to formally share your view on climate change in Penticton and the big ideas in the plan.
  • Complete the additional surveys on Home Energy Retrofits and Electric Vehicles to inform the creation of specific strategies for these areas.

Prizes for completing surveys!

We have three surveys we would like you to complete - Community Climate Action Plan (top priority), Home Energy Retrofit and Electric Vehicles. FortisBC has donated energy- saving gift packages for completing the surveys. The gift packages consist of a FortisBC cooler bag, a power bar, a thermostat, and a wireless charger. You will receive an entry for the draw for each of the three surveys you complete. Feedback will be collected through to Sept. 26, 2021. Extended to Sept. 29, 2021.

We need compost pick up now until the facility is built. Spa Hills Compost picks up weekly in Penticton and could start service quickly. Buses should be EV mini buses servicing smaller areas and taking riders to central hubs. We need more charging stations for EVs and they should be solar powered especially in city-owned parking lots. Solar grids in communities would power our system and reduce city costs. The city should educate and subsidize citizens in forming solar coops to reduce purchase and installing solar grid systems that power the homes and the city providing resiliency.

Clean air is of utmost importance. We need more parks and green space as trees provide the very best solution to clean air. The City has tripled in population since the 50's but we have minium additional community and neighborhood parks. We need to plant more trees.
We should buy the Kampe property and make it into a park with the house as a small events venue.
If we are truly thinking about our future generations we should buy the South Beach Drive properties a they become available, even if it takes many years, for future public beach and waterfront . They would actually be cheaper than your ridiculous bike route.
All our highways, and even Government St. , have bicycle routes marked by only a solid white line, and they have sufficed and served well. Why did you construct the monstrosity in downtown Penticton? Those dollars could have been put to better use improving our roads and ensuring every neighbor hood has a small park or gathering space .
We will have evolved as a forward thinking civilization when progress is not marked by the number of building permits. We are making Penticton into a concrete jungle of ticky-tacky boxes. Our size is only 3 miles by 6 miles and space is limited - use it more wisely. The area used to be covered in fruit trees which helped with air pollution but now it is grapes and nothing planted to compensate.
The Timmins Ave property would certainly serve better as an addition to the playing fields or for parking for same.
ALL the buses use either Cherry Lane or Peach Tree as their depot instead of Downtown Penticton where we have spent millions to beautify in order to attract costumers. Good for the malls but bad for Downtown. You razed the old bus depot instead of rebuilding it as a bus hub for pedestrian customers. You instead built another parking lot for more polluting vehicular traffic .Cars circle around the downtown looking for a free parking spot - more pollution.. If you truly want to help the businesses downtown, remove the parking meters for 6 months and monitor the increased business for the downtown. Our downtown is slowly dying.
Traffic is the worst contributor to air pollution. We are surrounded by thousands of people living around our boundaries and while, yes, they do shop here, mainly at the malls now, they also have virtually NO FACILITIES of any kind in their areas and they use everything in Penticton for nothing. The traffic coming into Penticton is extremely heavy, creating wear and tear on our roads necessitating more lights, etc. Share the load! Somehow we have to encourage more use of the public transit system. Perhaps they do not run on schedules that are compatible with work schedules. Perhaps the routes need to be expanded to cover more areas of the City. Why not survey the employees of all the City businesses?
Since boating and water traffic, including float planes, is different from passive green space and beachfront activities, separate the marina business from Skaha Park in all future plans, which would certainly simplify marina leasing operations.
