Project Overview

McNicoll Park is a multi-use park located in the eastern area of Penticton. The project involves the eastern portion of McNicoll Park, as indicated by the blue project boundary in the photo above. This portion of the park includes a sports field, cinder track, and supporting amenities that are used by both organized groups and the broader community.

The City is planning to replace the park’s aging irrigation system and, as part of this work, is taking the opportunity to review how the site is used and how it can best support current and future needs.

Community engagement will help inform this process by identifying how the park is used today and what refinements or adjustments may be considered as part of the project.

This work aligns with the City’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan, Sports and Recreation Needs Assessment and supports Council’s approved capital projects for 2026.

Project Goals

The goal of this project is to ensure McNicoll Park continues to function as a well-used and adaptable community space.

Through this project, the City aims to:

  • Replace aging irrigation infrastructure
  • Understand how the park is currently used
  • Identify opportunities to improve the layout and functionality of the site
  • Support both organized sports groups and general community use
  • Ensure the park remains sustainable and easy to maintain over time

About McNicoll Park

McNicoll Park is a larger, active park that supports a range of recreational uses.

  • Location: 1051 Penticton Avenue
  • Size: Approximately 5.3 acres
  • Primary features:
    • Rugby / football field (oval)
    • Cinder running track (approximately 2,975 m²) - see image above
    • Irrigation system
    • Bleachers and storage (C-can)
    • Pathways and surrounding open space
    • Mature trees surrounding the site
    • The park forms part of a broader recreational area that also includes a baseball diamond, school grounds and is connected to nearby amenities and neighbourhoods.
  • The site is:
    • Adjacent to L’école Entre Lacs School
    • Connected to the Penticton Creek Pathway
    • Located along Penticton Avenue, a key corridor
    • Surrounded by residential neighbourhoods
    • Within proximity to other recreational spaces such as McLaren Park and the Duncan Ave.

The current irrigation system at McNicoll Park is approximately 40 years old and has exceeded its expected service life. This renewal project provides an opportunity to step back and review how the site functions overall before finalizing the new irrigation layout.

Key considerations include:

  • Supporting both organized sports and informal community use
  • Understanding how different areas of the park site are currently used
  • Ensuring the irrigation layout aligns with current and future recreation needs
  • Protecting mature trees and existing site features

No design decisions have been made at this stage. Community input, along with feedback from user groups, will help identify potential site configurations that support both organized sports and the broader community.
